Jim Sensenbrenner Is Not Satisfied

And frankly, neither am I.

At issue in the new intelligence bill: illegal immigrants can get drivers' licenses all too easily. The nineteen 9/11 assassins had sixty-three valid drivers' licenses among them. And drivers' licenses are the preferred ID for the airlines.

Something has to give, folks. Either the Federal government starts issuing national ID's, like the French carte d'identite, or else we start requiring minimum security standards for drivers' licensure. Now here in New Jersey, the Motor Vehicle Commission has rolled out a new type of ultra-secure, very hard-to-forge driver's license and also has established a Six-Point ID Verification System that requires you to submit proof of identity, age, address, and status as a lawful resident. That's a start. The validation of birth certificates and so on is another issue entirely--but States should at least require this level of identification. Too many States don't ask enough questions--and you hear of movements to allow illegal immigrants to get drivers' licenses anyway! (Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently vetoed just such a silly bill in California.)

Chairmen Sensenbrenner wanted this Federal intelligence bill to set a minimum identity standard for driver's licensure. The Senate has consistently refused. That's why Sensenbrenner still cannot support this bill and will not vote for it.

Rush Limbaugh is already proposing Chairman Sensenbrenner for the new job of Director of National Intelligence that this bill creates. I second that nomination.
