Pro-choice Congressman Infuriates Democrats
How could that happen, you ask? The answer to the riddle is that the issue at hand is not abortion--it's Social Security.
That a Republican could propose partial privatization of that venerable Ponzi scheme (excuse me: Old Age, Survivorship, and Disability Insurance program) and then find a Democrat willing not just to sign on with him but actively promote the concept, testifies better than I can that Social Security is broken, that it is taking its present beneficiaries toward an unsafe bridge over a rocky canyon, and that everybody who cares to know, knows it. This is how big a thing that Representatives Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) and Allen Boyd (D-FL) are now doing.
The Democratic House leadership are spitting mad--but when Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) spouts off more knee-jerk liberal foolishness, is that really news? It would be news if any of those House leaders announced their intention to work with these two.
Understand this: I am forty-seven years old, and I do not look for Social Security to pay me anything. Not one dollar; not one penny. And I don't buy the boatloads of fertilizer that Social Security's apologists have fed me over the years. And about that "trust fund"--that consists strictly of US government bonds, which are never--never--as good as cash. The money has already been spent! If everybody were to get that through his thick head, Social Security reform would be a no-brainer.
